Costs of stress in the workplace

Article by Kaenz

With the increasing pace of life, stress is rapidly becoming a major problem in the workplace. Other than the physical effects, like heart disease, injuries, strokes, chronic diseases etc., stress also delivers a fatal blow to organisational well-being through absenteeism, turnover and a reduction in employee satisfaction they get from their work, thus reducing the overall work performance.

The costs of stress in the workplace is especially recognisable in certain occupations like police work, acting, firefighting etc. Additionally, certain occupations are highly prone to stress, which are physicians, nurses and doctors. For example, amongst the nurses, the 'burnout' effect -also known as the premature withdrawal from one's carreer- is quite common. Furthermore, government workers also suffer from certain problems. The rapidly changing government policies and the remoteness from the people served can lead to a sense of rolelessness, which in return cause stress.

Other than the above occupational hazards, there are also some 'direct' effects which are caused by stress in the workplace like absenteeism and high employee turnover. Absenteeism mostly occurs together with the tough out-of-work conditions of the employee like home-family responsibilites and personal problems. It causes a lack of commitment and reduces the work performance greatly. According to researchs, stress at work is the single biggest cause of absence. The high turnover rate has a direct effect on the organisation due to high training costs. Each year companies invest huge sums of money into training systems and programmes, and it all goes to nothing when the employee quits the job. Also, the increase in turnover rate distrupts other workers and reduce overall effectiveness of the organisation.

As it can be seen, stress affects the worklife in an organisation through various things. Organisations must address these problems with stress in mind and first develop practices to reduce stress levels in the organisat! ion.
